AUSTRALIAN heavy-truck sales growth continues to outperform the SUV and passenger-car markets as industry predictions are for the best year since the global financial crisis (GFC).

The heavy-commercial market was up 10.4 per cent year-to-date to the end of October compared with the same 10 months in 2016, while the total vehicle market rose only 0.5 per cent.

It also compares with the 10 months sales of passenger cars, down 6.9 per cent on 2016; with SUVs up 4.3 per cent and light-commercial vehicles up 7.4 per cent.

The truck manufacturer and component supplier group, the Truck Industry Council, said sales continued to deliver growth during October as 2885 new trucks and 525 new heavy vans were sold during the month.

“All segments are tracking higher than they were at this time in 2016,” said TIC CEO, Tony McMullen.

“I believe the momentum built year-to-date will continue for November and December to produce the best sales result we have seen since the GFC,” he said.

He predicted that a “solid year-end to 2017 will result in a healthy start to 2018 and continued sales growth next year”.

Year-to-date, cab-chassis and the prime-mover category was 10.7 per cent above the results at the end of October 2016 (up 2390 units) while the van category delivered an 8.1 per cent increase (367 units) over the same period.

The heavy-duty segment had its second best October result on record with 1188 new units, 36.6 per cent higher than October 2016 sales. The medium-duty sector maintained “modest positive growth”, the TLC said, with 652 sales, up 155 extra trucks or 2.7 per cent for the year.

Top brand in the segment for this year was Isuzu, up 6.1 per cent, followed by Hino, up 7.8 per cent.

Iveco is the sixth biggest heavy-commercial seller in Australia this year with a 14.1 per cent rise on the October YTD figures.

The sales data comes as Iveco has ramped up its model range of the Daily light truck that can be driven on a car licence. The company is now offering a limited-edition dual-cab 4WD version of the Daily light truck which will be limited to only 100 units
