BMW Group Australia has appointed the head of its Motorrad motorcycle division, Tony Sesto, as general manager of the Mini brand, effective January 1, 2016.

He succeeds Kai Bruesewitz, who is returning to a still-to-be-specified position with BMW AG in Germany next year, after four years in the role in this country.

Mr Sesto has been managing the Bavarian bike division for the past five-and-a-half years, playing a key role in boosting market share from 6.5 per cent to 10.5 per cent.

Prior to that, he was the national sales manager with Honda Motorcycles in Australia.

According to BMW Australia, Mr Sesto will bring “an extremely strong track record of sales, network management, marketing, brand and product management, and customer service” to his new role as head of the British brand.

Similarly, Mr Bruesewitz has also overseen a period of growth. Since becoming general manager of Mini Australia at the beginning of 2012, sales have risen nearly 50 per cent, with the 3000-unit mark expected to be breached for the first time at the end of this year.

The move back to Germany ends a second term in Australia for Mr Bruesewitz, after a stint as a sales and marketing intern at BMW’s Mulgrave headquarters in 1997. Back in Germany, he joined the fledgling Mini brand in the early 2000s.
