Powering up: Pam Fletcher is now in charge of executing GM’s new global EV strategy, which will bring more than 20 new models to market by 2023 and is targeting one million annual sales by 2026.

GENERAL Motors has promoted experienced engineer Pam Fletcher as vice-president of global electric vehicle (EV) programs, a new role created as the US auto giant commits to launching more than 20 all-electric vehicles globally by 2023 and has set a target of selling one million EVs annually by 2026.

Holden is expected to eventually offer EVs given its parent company’s new strategy, however the Australian subsidiary is yet to commit to any of the forthcoming models built off GM’s forthcoming second-generation EV architecture that GM CEO Mary Barra recently confirmed would include a small crossover, two large SUVs (one mainstream and the other a luxury entrant) and a “low-roof car”.

The new modular platform will be used across various segments and GM brands, with Ms Barra telling investors at a global automotive conference in New York earlier this month that the company was working to provide “desirable, obtainable and profitable vehicles that deliver a range of over 300 miles (483km)”.

Ms Fletcher was previously executive chief engineer for electrified vehicles and new technologies, leading the team that developed the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt small hatch.

For more than a decade, Ms Fletcher has been in leadership roles supporting the engineering of GM’s electrified and autonomous vehicles, overseeing various other programs including the light-sized Chevrolet Spark EV, the second-generation Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid and the related Cadillac ELR.

Her team also led development of GM’s Super Cruise hands-free highway driver assist system, which recently debuted in the Cadillac CT6.

According to the company, Ms Fletcher is now charged with leading the “vehicle program execution for GM’s entire global electric vehicle portfolio”.

She reports to vice-president of autonomous and electric vehicle programs Doug Parks, who said: “Nobody is more prepared to help us lead the way to a zero-emissions future than Pam Fletcher.

“Under Pam’s leadership, GM will continue to deliver electric vehicles that delight our customers and exceed their expectations.”

Ms Fletcher had served as chief engineer of autonomous and electrified vehicles and new technology since July 2016. Previous positions included executive chief engineer of electrified vehicles (2012-2016), Chevrolet Volt propulsion system chief engineer (2009-2012) and hybrid and electric propulsion systems assistant chief engineer (2007-2008).

Since June this year, Ms Fletcher has also sat on the board of California-based laser technology company Coherent Inc.

The first-generation Volt plug-in hybrid was sold in Australia as a Holden but the second generation was not developed for right-hand drive.
