SELL My Car, the public-facing car buying arm of Cox Automotive Australia, has achieved the purchase and sale of more than 50,000 used cars which the company sees as a major milestone for the service.

Launched in Werribee in Melbourne’s west in 2014 in front of visiting dignitaries from Cox Automotive’s head office in Atlanta, the service offers the simplest and quickest way for car owners to dispose of their vehicles.

Along the way the Sell My Car service has provided hundreds of thousands of valuations online and achieved a Net Promoter Score of 80.

Sell My Car starts with the seller getting an offer for their vehicle via the Sell My Car website. With a few details and about five minutes, sellers can get an online estimate of the value of their vehicle. This valuation is powered by Cox Automotive Australia’s Kelley Blue Book.

If the buyer wants to go ahead with the sale, a Sell My Car vehicle buyer visits the seller or the seller can visit one of the company’s buying centres in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania.

When the seller accepts an offer to purchase the vehicle, Sell My Car finalises the arrangements and can get the seller paid within a day.

Private vehicles purchased by Sell My Car are on-sold at Cox Automotive Australia’s Manheim auctions open to the general public and car dealers. These weekly auctions are attended in person along with online simulcasts across Australia.

The Sell My Car service is especially appealing to people who want the use of their vehicle right up to the day they are leaving the country. Backpackers, families of diplomats and international executives departing Australia frequently drop their car off at Sell My Car locations on the way to the airport with the added appeal that the payment for the vehicle hits their bank account within a day.

The service avoids the hassles (roadworthy certificates and negotiating classified advertising buyers) of trying to sell their cars in the lead up to their departure. Avoiding the trouble and costs of getting a RWC (where applicable) or avoiding the juggling of private buyers arriving at their home) is also appealing to domestic sellers of cars.

As previously reported in GoAutoNews Premium, Manheim auction volumes are up more than 40 per cent this year and are at four-year highs with double-digit growth across all metro and regional locations.

Cox Automotive Australia says that sales of Sell My Car vehicles are playing a part in this volume growth along with ex-fleet, lease, dealer trade-in and OEM company cars that are flowing through Manheim’s auction lanes.

The head of Sell My Car, John Hanna, said in a statement: “I am proud to see Sell My Car establish itself in the Australian retail sector over the last 10 years by providing a quick and simple car-selling solution to the public.”

“By selling to us, you will avoid waiting around for strangers to view your car, the risk of not selling for a long time while it de-values, and ongoing maintenance, registration and insurance costs.”

He said Sell My Car direct-purchases all manner of private vehicles, across segments, price bands and fuel types, with a growing focus on electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y – plenty of which are now entering the second-hand market.

Looking ahead, Sell My Car continues to focus on volume growth and is working behind the scenes to enhance its public visibility via a redesigned website and an ongoing ramping up of its external promotional activities.
