NISSAN Motor Company has promoted Australian PR professional Steve Coughlan to a new position as deputy director of global brand and technology communications, based in Japan.

He was previously Infiniti Motor Company’s head of global communications based in Yokohama.

In his new role, Mr Coughlan oversees global brand and technology communication for both Nissan and Infiniti.

“I’m delighted to be part of this exciting chapter for Nissan and share the brand’s product, technology and motorsport stories with the world,” he said of his appointment.

This year, Mr Coughlan celebrates his 21st anniversary of service to the automotive industry, starting in 2003 with Toyota Australia as a sales analyst before moving through roles in accessory planning, product planning and product communications during a 15-year tenure.

He was primarily based in Sydney, with a three-year assignment to the global Toyota HQ in Aichi, Japan, as liaison for accessory planning and development.

From 2012-2017, Mr Coughlan was Toyota Australia product communications manager supporting the media launch of almost all models including the FJ Cruiser, LandCruiser Prado and LandCruiser 70 Series off-roaders, the 86 sportscar, C-HR compact crossover, HiLux ute, RAV4 medium SUV and others.

“When the Sydney office closed in late 2017, I elected to depart the company and joined Infiniti at its global office in Hong Kong in the role of senior manager, global product marketing,” he said.

“Essentially it leveraged my product knowledge and passion to lay out the positioning and key messaging for all future models to an internal and global agency audience.”

Mr Coughlan moved to Japan in 2020 when Infiniti’s global HQ was relocated to Yokohama. He took the role of senior manager of Infiniti’s global communications, dealing with the media mainly in Infiniti’s core markets of North America, China and the Middle East.

During his four years in that position, he worked on the launches of the Infiniti QX55, QX60, and most recently, the new- generation QX80 and Vision Qe Concept.

“I had the opportunity to experience everything from setting up global first-drive media events in the Napa Valley for QX60, to launching Infiniti’s refreshed brand to media at an event in Tokyo, adjacent to last year’s Japan Mobility show,” he said.

“I’ve also been fortunate to be involved in regional motor show debuts, including Beijing last month where Infiniti displayed the Vision Qe concept.”
