THE Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC) has appointed Anthony Botta as an industry specialist in dealerships to bring fresh expertise in strengthening advocacy for dealership networks across Victoria and Tasmania.

He joins the organisation after building valuable experience at the OEM level with brands including Ford Australia and Mazda Australia, and succeeds Michael ‘Mick’ McKenna.

The VACC said Mr Botta steps into a role critical for shaping automotive policy at a time when the industry faces unprecedented transformation.

Mr Botta said: “The opportunity to champion dealerships while driving policy innovation across two states is what drew me to this position.

“Dealerships are the backbone of our automotive ecosystem, and they need strong representation as the industry evolves.”

His appointment reflects VACC’s continued commitment to enhancing its policy capabilities amid rapid changes in automotive technology, consumer preferences, and regulatory frameworks.

As an industry specialist, Mr Botta will lead engagement with dealership networks while simultaneously developing policy positions that address both current challenges and future opportunities.

A key aspect of his role involves direct communication with government stakeholders, translating industry needs into actionable policy recommendations.

“Effective advocacy means building strong relationships with decision-makers and presenting well-researched, practical solutions,” Mr Botta said.

“My goal is to ensure dealership voices are heard in every relevant policy discussion.”

His responsibilities extend to leading industry committees, where he will facilitate collaboration among dealership representatives to identify common challenges and develop unified positions.

This consultative approach aims to harness collective expertise while acknowledging the diverse needs within the dealership community.

Mr Botta’s professional background has equipped him with valuable insights into manufacturer-dealer relationships and the operational realities of automotive retail.

“My time working with dealer principals and dealership owners has given me first-hand experience with the challenges dealerships face, from inventory management to customer experience and profitability pressures,” he said.

VACC executive manager, policy and communications Dr Imogen Garcia Reid emphasised the strategic importance of the appointment: “Anthony brings the right mix of industry knowledge and communication skills at a critical time. His passion for the automotive sector and understanding of dealership operations will strengthen our advocacy efforts significantly.”

The timing of Mr Botta’s appointment coincides with several pressing policy issues affecting dealerships, including the transition toward electric vehicles, evolving franchise agreements, and post-pandemic supply chain challenges. His mandate includes developing forward-looking policy positions that support dealership sustainability while embracing innovation.

“The automotive retail landscape is experiencing unprecedented change,” Mr Botta said.

“My role is to help dealerships navigate these changes successfully while identifying opportunities for growth and adaptation.”

When asked about immediate priorities, Mr Botta highlighted the importance of comprehensive stakeholder consultation.

“My first months will focus on extensive engagement with dealerships across Victoria and Tasmania. Understanding their on-the-ground reality is essential for effective representation,” he said.

The appointment reflects VACC’s expanding influence in automotive policy development across both states. With dealerships employing thousands of Victorians and Tasmanians while contributing significantly to regional economies, Mr Botta’s work will have implications beyond the automotive sector itself.

For Mr Botta, the position represents an opportunity to make a lasting impact: “What excites me most is the chance to contribute to policies that will shape the future of automotive retail in our region. Helping dealerships thrive amid industry transformation will be both a challenge and a privilege.”
