THE Holden Commodore remains Australia’s most serviced model for the third year in a row while the Toyota brand was the nation’s most common workshop visitor last year, according to management data company Autodata.

While the Commodore is regularly at the top of the survey, this is the first time that the Toyota brand has replaced the Holden brand as a more frequent workshop guest.

The results of the 2019 survey are part of a global program that drew information from more than 85,000 workshops around the world.

Globally, the top three most accessed Autodata product lines included engine oil, technical specifications and camshaft drive system. In total, technicians checked more than 47 million pieces of technical information through Autodata.

In Australia, the Holden VE Commodore (2006-2010) retained its first position for the third report in a row.

Autodata spokesman Puneet Joshi told GoAutoNews Premium from the company’s London head office that Autodata’s term “most serviced” was used deliberately throughout the report.

“When used in relation to vehicles, it refers to the vehicle model information that workshops have accessed most frequently during 2019,” he said.

When asked about why one car would visit a workshop more than another, he said that if a particular model had regular problems, “it would bump it up the table”.

“However, it would be fair to say that quantity of that particular vehicle on the road will have a bigger effect on the numbers,” he said.

“A vehicle with shorter recommended intervals between services would also push it up the table.

“We deliberately do not try to differentiate or judge vehicles between these different factors, as workshops do not log the reason for looking up a vehicle in Autodata, so it would be unfair to make that assumption.”

The second most serviced car was the Volkswagen Golf VI (5K1) from 2008-2013 which moved up to second position from ninth in last year’s report.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee (2011-) was in third place. Mr Joshi said this result was particularly noteworthy as the model did not feature in last year’s top 10.

The most serviced light-commercial vehicle was once again the Toyota HiLux (2005-2015), which also retained its position at the top of the list for the third report in a row.

Toyota has a six-month service program on most of its models, which would affect results.

Autodata said the most serviced motorcycle was the Honda CBR.

Autodata managing director Rod Williams said the data from its extensive global database “allows us to see where the demand for content exists so that we can provide the most in-demand and up-to-date information to workshops”.

As well as highlighting the most serviced vehicles, the report indicates some key trends in the automotive aftermarket sector.

Looking at the global picture and combining the markets, Ford was the overall most serviced manufacturer.

“However, a notable observation is the continued prominence of Volkswagen which is in first place as the most serviced brand in 55 per cent of the countries surveyed,” Autodata said.

The report also reinforces the dominance of national brands being the most serviced cars within their respective countries.

In Germany, all top-10 places were attributed to German cars and it was the same for French cars in France. In Italy, Italian cars made up 50 per cent of the top 10 and in Sweden, Swedish cars accounted for 70 per cent of the top 10, with Volvo models filling the top three positions.

In Australia, Japanese manufacturers continue to dominate the top 10 most serviced hybrid vehicles, filling all 10 positions with the Toyota Camry (2012-2017) retaining its first position from last year’s report.

The Tesla Model S (2014-) was in first place as the most serviced electric vehicle after having not appeared in either of the last two reports.

It was also in second place internationally, demonstrating the continued rise in popularity of the Tesla marque across all markets.

Internationally, the Most Serviced Car Report 2019 was topped by Holden’s sister brand under the Opel/Vauxhall name with the Corsa-D.

The Ford Focus (MY2004 and MY2008) remained in second place and the Nissan Qashqai/Qashqai +2 (2010) was third.

The most serviced LCV was the VW Transporter T5 (2004-2015), which retained first place for the third report in a row, while the Honda CBR was also the most serviced motorcycle globally.

Autodata, part of Solera Holdings, said the regions highlighted in the latest report are the 20 countries (21 for motorcycles) with the highest number of Autodata subscribers.

To determine the most serviced vehicles, the company analysed the use of Autodata’s technical information applications from the beginning of April 2019 to the end of September 2019.
