TRAFFIC data and mobility insight business Intelematics, part of the RACV, has appointed Dr Anthony Symons as its head of technology and data.

He was previously at Optus where he was responsible for leading the development of digital platforms for Optus Enterprise. Prior to Optus, he held roles including solutions architect at Queensland Health and Hewlett Packard.

Dr Symons will lead a team of 35 developers and data specialists with a focus on customised services and solutions spanning traffic data, vehicle tracking, vehicle health and data management and insights.

He will also oversee the evolution of established solutions, including vehicle safety and security platform Asure, and traffic data and analysis solution Insight.

Intelematics said the appointment coincides with its focus on supporting the next generation of connected and electrified vehicles, which it said will be adopted by governments, enterprises, and drivers over the next decade in Australia.

Dr Symons is a qualified electrical engineer who most recently held the position of strategy and architecture manager at Optus Enterprise.

He is credited with launching the Optus Connected Vehicle platform and the telco’s digital experience customer platform.

Intelematics CEO Nick Marks said: “The ever-increasing abundance of data and the desire for connectivity is changing the way we live. In-vehicle connectivity is no longer reserved for luxury brands but is considered a requirement across the market.

“As vehicles become more connected, we want to be ahead of the curve to ensure Australian businesses and governments can capture and intelligently use new types of data to improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of all modes of transport.

“Anthony has a proven track record for delivering transformative services and solutions and under his leadership our development and data teams will be at the forefront of the connected vehicle evolution.”

Dr Symons said: “Over the past 20 years Intelematics has developed an enviable reputation as a leader in mobility solutions.

“With the rise of 5G and the next generation of connected vehicles on the horizon, there is a significant opportunity to help the Australian market harness these technologies and transform the way we use our roads, manage our fleets and maintain our vehicles.”
