TOYOTA Australia has announced former executive director of sales and marketing Matt Callachor would return to Australia as the car-making giant’s next vice-president effective June 1 this year.

Mr Callachor, a Toyota veteran of almost 35 years, has spent the past three years working with Lexus International as general manager in planning as part of an intra-company transfer and will return to Toyota Australia to oversee its non-manufacturing operating arms and day-to-day operations.

When he left the role of executive director of sales and marketing, which was filled by Tony Cramb in mid 2013, Mr Callachor was the first Australian executive to oversee a Lexus division in Japan.

Reporting directly to Toyota Australia president Dave Buttner, Mr Callachor will be responsible for areas including sales and marketing, product planning and development and corporate services and finance.

His appointment will permit Mr Buttner and Toyota chairman Max Yasuda to turn their efforts to strategic matters and long-term planning as Toyota Australia’s local manufacturing shuts down by the end of next year.

Mr Callachor said his return to Toyota was a welcome one, and that an important aspect of his new role would be to facilitate a smooth transition of Toyota Australia from local manufacturer to full-time importer.

“It brings me great excitement to return to Toyota Australia in the role of vice-president,” he said.

“The company is in the midst of its biggest transformation and it is important that we not only make this the most respectful employee transition, but also that we ensure any changes are as seamless as possible for our guests.

“My main focus will be ensuring that we continue to deliver great products and services to our guests and create those ‘oh what a feeling!’ moments every day.”

Last year, Toyota Australia accounted for 17.8 per cent of all new car sales, racking up 206,236 vehicle registrations to yet again lead the market.

For the first four months of this year, Toyota has found 63,060 new homes for its vehicles placing it well ahead of second-placed Mazda’s 38,910, but down 1.9 per cent year-on-year.
