AVILOO Australia and New Zealand distributor and founder of TestEV, Nathan Gore-Brown, told GoAutoNews Premium that he was planning for the launch of an EV battery warranty cover next year.

Mr Gore-Brown said that global battery business Aviolo has a battery warranty in Europe which will now be introduced in Australia and New Zealand.

“We will make the product available to all Aviloo certificate holders,” he said.

“The cover is for 12 months or 20,000km. If degradation in the battery is detected to be above what would be expected, then the owner is compensated for lost value.”

He said that holders could extend the cover each year by having annual battery tests through Aviloo.

The cover is underwritten by a Swiss insurance company and compensation amount in Europe is about 3000 Euros. He said the compensation amount was yet to be fixed for Australia and New Zealand.

There are 30 markets in Europe and the UK that now offer the battery cover.Aviloo undertakes EV battery tests in Australia for fleet and private motorists, including EVs sold through Manheim auctions.

As recently reported by GoAutoNews Premium, electric vehicle battery testing has been identified as a major factor in stronger EV resale prices, with UK data claiming a battery health certificate can help cars sell 36 per cent faster than EVs without a certificate.

Australia participated in a recent study into EV battery health along with four other regions.

The study covered more than 500,000 battery tests held between 2022 and 2026 and Aviloo said it reported that dealers face sharply different battery-health and valuation risks across popular electric models.

It analysed 20 popular EV models in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia and said that dealerships could not rely solely on mileage or model-level averages when sourcing and valuing used EV stock.

It said that a used EV market had significant variables of rapid product development, changing incentives and fluctuations in vehicle supply that ultimately affected EV battery health.

Aviloo said that used EVs with identical ages and mileages could therefore have materially different usable ranges, desirability and values.

“This creates potential risks for dealerships when appraising part exchanges, purchasing stock, setting retail prices or underwriting warranties,” it said.

“Vehicle-specific battery testing could also help dealers support advertised prices, demonstrate vehicle condition to customers and distinguish stronger examples from apparently similar stock.”

Aviloo chief executive Marcus Berger said EV batteries were ageing better than the ‘they wear out fast’ myth suggested “but that’s not the most useful thing this report tells you”.

“What matters is that battery health varies significantly between models, and even more between individual cars of the same model,” he said.

“A gap of 10 per cent or 15 per cent in state of health is a real difference in range, in what a car is worth, and in what you can rely on it for.

“You simply can’t know where your car sits in that range without testing it independently.”
