A QUALITY survey of new Chinese electric vehicles has shown brands like Tesla and Geely are streets ahead with a low number of complaints compared with other well-known Chinese brands with disappointing results for BYD and Chery as well as Volkswagen.
The survey by 12365Auto, a Chinese website that monitors automotive quality and reliability, was taken in the third quarter of this year and measured the number of faults per 10,000 vehicles sold.
Tesla Model Y
Tesla was first and equal third best in terms of the lowest number of issues per 10,000 with Geely second. The Tesla Model Y was best with a rating of 2.2 while the Geely Geometry E was second best with a score of 2.3 issues per 10,000 vehicles sold. The Tesla Model 3 scored 2.7.
But the VW ID.4 X came in at 35.2 faults per 10,000. The BYD Dolphin had 37.3 issues and the BYD Han was second last with a rating of 38.5. The Lixiang ONE, with 41.8 faults per 10,000, ranks roughly 20 times worse than the Tesla Model Y.
The average rate of faults for electric vehicles was 19.2. This compares with an average for all vehicles, including ICE cars, of 42.2 faults.
This indicates that China is making EVs at a higher rate of quality than ICE vehicles. The worst quality EV, the Lixiang ONE, with 41.8 faults is close to the 42.2 faults average for all vehicles.
Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV
While the General Motors Buick did not come out all that well, the Wuling SGMW Hongguang Mini (GM partly owns Wuling), recorded just 2.9 faults.
This is remarkable because it is the cheapest of the Chinese EVs. It costs just a little north of $7000 with the battery included and $4200 without the battery. (The battery can be leased for $44 a month).
