MAZDA Australia has appointed Angus Thompson as senior manager of PR and corporate communications, effective February 21.

Joining the Mazda team from Porsche Cars Australia, where he was motorsport PR manager, Mr Thompson will temporarily replace Amy O’Brien who is taking a year of parental leave.

He has more than 20 years of experience in the automotive industry in Australia and in his home country of South Africa.

Mr Thompson said: “I’m looking forward to joining Mazda Australia and continuing the great work done by Amy O’Brien and her PR team.

“2023 promises to be a very exciting time for the brand and I feel privileged to be part of it.”

Since joining Porsche Cars Australia in 2019, he has served as motorsport communications manager in a role that saw him lead all public relations, media and content across the company’s motorsport division.

This role oversaw all social media, digital content, media strategy, communications and brand management for Porsche Motorsport programs and events in Australia.

Prior to his position at Porsche, he held similar positions at Michelin Australia since September 2016 where he led the group’s PR strategy for press, media and communication across corporate, products and motorsport.

This position covered the relationship and initiatives not only for each brand, but product line across all Australian and New Zealand media.

In 2017, he also oversaw the deployment of the BFGoodrich Business Model (brand management across Oceania) which included project managing global product launches for the BFGoodrich brand as well as developing the local dealer network project (customer events, training, POS material, financial management and commercial support).

He reported to the marketing director for Oceania but also had a functional report to the motorsport director for Asia as well as the Global BML leader in France.

Before joining BFGoodrich, he worked for AutoMate Training in Sydney and prior to that, he was in South Africa with the most recent role as editor of that country’s leading motoring magazine, TopCar.

Motorsport: Angus Thompson has extensive PR and motorsport experience, including in the communications department of Porsche Cars Australia.
