Leading light: Brian Negus’ extensive experience in the public sector has seen him take on key leadership roles in the private sector, supporting public policy on major transport initiatives.

A LEADING figure in the Australian transport industry with more than 50 years’ experience across both the private and public sectors, Brian Negus was this week named as the recipient of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Australia’s 2018 Max Lay Lifetime Achievement Award.

In announcing that Mr Negus will receive the honour at the ITS peak industry body’s annual awards presentation ceremony in Brisbane on November 22, ITS Australia president Dean Zabrieszach described him as “a trusted adviser in the entire transport field” and someone “widely valued because of his dedication and assiduity in supporting others and helping them to succeed”.

“For most of his career, Brian has been driving organisations, and the community, for progress in the transportation sector, especially smart technology solutions to improve transport safety, mobility and sustainability,” he said.

“It is because of this that the industry has chosen Brian to be the recipient of the Max Lay Lifetime Achievement Award.”

Mr Negus, who said he was “honoured and delighted” to the receive the award, is an official ambassador for ITS Australia, as well as its immediate past president, having represented the RACV on the board since he joined the automobile club in 2007.

He remains a strategic adviser to the RACV after stepping down last year from the position he is probably best known for – general manager of public policy – after 10 years in the role that saw him become an influential figure in virtually all major transport initiatives in the state.

Prior to joining the RACV, Mr Negus had spent three years as deputy director of public transport in Victoria, seven years as metropolitan regional director for VicRoads and a short stint as general manager of port planning for the Melbourne Port Corporation.

Despite retiring from full-time employment, Mr Negus also remains a board member and director of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a member of the elite Club Melbourne Ambassador Program and serves as chairman of collaborative ITS consultancy Cica Group.

The coveted lifetime achievement award – named after Dr Max Lay, a globally recognised ITS pioneer and leader – was last year won by veteran road safety advocate Lauchlan McIntosh.

The ITS awards ceremony next month will also recognise a broad range of individual and collective achievements across industry, government, automated vehicle, research and young professional categories.
