TOYOTA Boshoku Australia has announced it will close its local manufacturing operation in Laverton North in Melbourne’s west on October 3, the same day the last Camry will roll off the production line at Toyota Australia’s Altona plant.

A member of the Toyota Group – a coalition of companies that shares a working relationship with the Japanese car-making giant – Toyota Boshoku Australia has produced automotive interior components since its local inception in 2002 and currently supplies seats and door trims, along with other interior hard and soft trims (excluding the instrument panel and console), for the locally built Camry and Aurion.

According to the company, “as a specialist automotive interior components maker the end of vehicle production in Australia has forced Toyota Boshuku Australia to cease production”.

Parting ways: Toyota Boshoku Australia will shut its doors on October 3 to coincide with Toyota Australia’s final local day of manufacturing.

The closure of the parts-maker will result in the loss of 370 jobs, but Toyota Boshoku Australia director Mark Curnow said the company has been preparing for its closure for a number of years.

“Since our 2015 announcement we have been focused on the transition of our employees,” he said. “We established a Career Transition Centre and have partnered with Kangan Bendigo TAFE, Victoria Polytechnic (VUT) and Wyndham Community Education Centre to provide training opportunities for employees.

“We have a highly skilled work force engaged in world class manufacturing. We believe the additional skills they acquire throughout the transition process will further enhance their value as employees in their chosen endeavours.”

The education program included numeracy and literacy development for English-as-a-second-language employees, computer literacy, job preparation workshops, career advice and transition planning, and access to certificate level training.

Mr Curnow said the firm would continue produce the parts for the next nine months until its closure date.

“We will continue to conduct high quality production while providing the highest level of support for our employees at this challenging time and as they transition to future employment,” he said.
