THERE are 69 brands listed in the VFACTS year-to-date (YTD) market share figures as at the end of October. By our count some 54 of these brands sell cars, utes, vans or SUVs.

The winner is obvious with Toyota a clear number one. Despite slipping a tiny 0.1 per cent in market share YTD it still comes in at nearly double second and third places combined at 17.5 per cent.

Second placed Mazda is up slightly by 0.2 per cent to 10.1 per cent, while third placed Hyundai has slipped 0.2 per cent to come in at 8.8 per cent.

Fourth placed Holden’s YTD share fell 0.8 per cent to 8.0 per cent, while traditional rival Ford has gained 0.9 per cent YTD to sit on 6.9 per cent in fifth.

The top five brands claim collective 51.3 per cent YTD market share.

Half the brands listed, 27 of them, compete for only 5.1 per cent of the market. Eighteen brands are collectively shown in the wheel of fortune as “other” and fight over 0.9 per cent of the market.

It is often said that Australia has one of, if not the most competitive new-car markets in the world. If so, it is also true that the competition has players in very different leagues.
