Mr Hurley has a career in the transport industry of more than 65 years. His fourth-generation family business has become one of the largest truck dealerships groups in Australia.
The association said Mr Hurley has been the figurehead of the success of his company, Brown and Hurley Group.
It said that his achievements earned him the award and congratulated him on his dedication and commitment to his work and the community. Mr Hurley retired in 2012 but remains a director of the company.
The Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) also honoured other industry members, including Trucking Woman of the Year, Melira Lister.
Ms Lister was recognised for her work on major multi-million dollar infrastructure and renewable energy projects with expertise in negotiation, advocacy and problem solving which has led to successful results for her clients. Ms Lister is also a strong advocate for women in the transport community.
With an outstanding driving record and hardworking attitude, Kathryn Mobbs, a 25-year employee of the Easter Group, was recognised as the first ever female QTA Professional Driver of the Year; and Canea Mersky, customer service manager at South East Queensland Hauliers, won the 2022 Daimler Emerging Leader of the Year award for her constant motivation and engagement in her career as a young person in the industry.
There were dual winners of the 2022 Young Achiever of the Year award – Dean Ryan of Clayton’s Towing, who started his career in the industry at 18 years old and has since proved an excellent work ethic and passion for the job; and Hugh Paton of Sizer and Coggil who is similarly valued by his employer and colleagues and after a dual apprenticeship after high school, opened up his own business which led to his current role of operations manager.
