TWO longstanding New Zealand automotive groups have invested millions in new showrooms for Maserati and, in particular, for expected strong sales for the brand’s new SUV, the Levante.

In the North Island, one of New Zealand’s oldest automotive groups, Winger Motors, has opened a multi-million dollar Maserati dealership in Auckland that prepares the market for an expanded model range.

The new dealership, in Newmarket, will be responsible for Maserati on the North Island.

The South Island will also see a new Maserati outlet when Euromarque in Christchurch opens a new Maserati showroom.

Euromarque, part of the Cockram Motor Group, has built a 220 square metre showroom on a 4500 square metre site in St Asaph Street in central Christchurch.

Cockram Motor Group managing director Angus Cockram said the business has been a Maserati dealership since 2007. It has 10 brands on three locations and employs 90 staff.

Winger Motors, which has been in business for almost 85 years, opened its 1500 square metre showroom on Great South Road. The showroom is matched by state-of-the-art workshops and a dedicated pre-delivery area. In total, the new dealership employs 18 people.

The dealership displays the Maserati models Ghibli, Quattroporte, GranCabrio, GranTurismo and the new Levante SUV that is expected to double Maserati sales in New Zealand.

“The acquisition of the Maserati franchise for Auckland marks an important new stage in the near 85 year history of Winger Motors,” said Winger Motors managing director Wayne Leach.

“In addition to the unique and considerable responsibility of representing such a legendary car-maker as Maserati, we will be working in an area of the car market which we have not previously served.

“This presents us with a range of exciting new challenges, but ones for which we believe we are fully prepared with more than eight decades of building Winger Motors on the foundations of superb customer service, excellent facilities and a unique personal touch for all our customers,” he said.

According to Maserati Australia, New Zealand and South Africa chief operating officer Glen Sealey, “Winger Motors are clearly the company to make this investment in facilities and people that will ensure Maserati owners in Auckland and the North Island enjoy a level of exclusive customer service that fully matches everything expected of a Maserati”.

Winger Motors was established in 1932 as Norman Winger and Lionel Squire in Hamilton before becoming Winger Motor Sales in 1935. It initially sold European brands but moved to Japanese cars from 1972, followed by Korean and US brands.

The company has dealerships on the North Shore and Greenlane in Auckland, Pukekohe and Hamilton, and Queenstown and Cromwell on the South Island.
