VOLVO’S performance arm, Polestar, has become a stand-alone business with its own range of electric cars on the way and it has celebrated in true Scandinavian-cool style by designing headquarters shaped like an ice-cube.

The building, under construction on the same grounds as Volvo Cars’ head office and factory at Torslanda near Gothenburg, is said to be an architectural translation of what Polestar stands for: “pure and uncompromised,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath.

It has an open layout to offer a creative workspace for staff, with interior design by Swedish architectural firm Bornstein & Lyckefors.

The architects’ director, pers Bornstein, said the cube design was chosen because it was “uncompromising and minimalist”.

“One of its unique design features is a white facade made entirely in glass that lets around 60 per cent of the light through, a first in Sweden and a challenge both in terms of design and engineering, but completely in line with Polestar’s progressive approach,” he said.

The building has three levels with 3800 square meters of office space and development area for up to 200 employees, up from 110 Polestar employees today in Sweden, as well as exhibition and display areas for cars.

The building is expected to be completed in September this year.

Polestar is Volvo Car Group’s performance road car brand, formed in October 2017 as a separate brand tasked with building electrified performance cars.

It also builds the more conventionally fuelled S60 and V60 Polestar performance road cars.
