SUBMARINING is the new “hot” leisure activity and the best excuse Aston Martin could muster to announce its own submarine.

In concert with Florida-based submersible vessel manufacturer, Triton Submarines, Aston Martin has designed a “luxury submarine” known as Project Neptune that will be made in a limited number and sell from about $A5 million.

Deliveries start at the end of next year and pundits are saying it’s a natural to appear in a forthcoming James Bond movie. With a DB11, of course.

Aston Martin has been 007’s automotive weapon of choice in 11 movies and the car-maker has no plans to lose the cache.

“We’re looking at the regeneration of our product line-up,” said a spokesperson.

Previous “regenerations” included the Toyota iQ-based Cygnet city car (2009-2013) and the 1976 Lagonda door-wedge design.

It is not the company’s first aquatic offering. Last year it unveiled a powerboat, of which two have been delivered.

The company has also diversified, opening Aston Martin Consulting in 2016 to work with clients on design, engineering and manufacturing projects such as Project Neptune.

Personal submarines have become the latest rich-lister accessory item, usually paired with a yacht.

In 2013, Tesla boss Elon Musk paid $A1.1 million for the “submarine” Lotus Esprit used by James Bond (Roger Moore) in the 1977 movie The Spy Who Loved Me.

After buying the car, known as ‘Wet Nellie’, Musk said: “I was disappointed to learn that it can’t actually transform (into a submarine).

“I am going to upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real.”

Should have waited for the Project Neptune.
